This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Lesson Instructor will ensure safety while teaching in YMCA pools and aquatics areas to all members, guests, and program participants participating in a swim lesson program.
1. Communicates and enforces swim lesson rules and guidelines to insure a safe environment in all aquatics areas by eliminate unsafe practices and physical hazards.
2. Gets all necessary equipment needed for assigned classes prior to the start of the class and makes sure that equipment is returned to its proper location when the classes have ended.
3. Be able to manage and supervise a group of children or adults up to 10 at a time without additional help. (Ratios: Preschool groups, ages 3-5-max 6 children; School Age, 6-14, max 7 except advanced group, max 10, adults, max 10)
4. Teach every assigned lesson, whether private or group, in the water for the duration of the lesson. No swim lesson classes may be taught from the deck.
5. Demonstrate skills as participants are expected to preform them.
6. Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
7. Maintains a fun, safe and well organized work area.
8. Handles and resolves swim lesson concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
9. Adheres to the YMCA and Aquatics Department Dress Code while at the YMCA.
10. Knows and follows correct emergency procedures for a Swim Lesson Instructor and fills out incident reports.
11. Works without constant direct supervision and remains at assigned post for extended periods of time.
12. Attends mandatory meetings and in-services.
13. Sets a good example in promptness, respect, manners, honesty and caring for all members, program participants, and guests and have character values are in line with the values of the YMCA.
14. Reports to work on time and never leaves classes unattended.
15. Maintains current required certifications.
16. Assumes other duties and assignments deemed appropriate by the Swim Lesson Coordinator or Director of Aquatics.
