On Thursday night, February 2nd we held our Annual Awards Dinner. The dinner is a moment for us and our members to take a break from our busy lives and recognize the amazing members and volunteers that make our YMCA such a special place. It is also the time where we welcome our new board members and thank our exiting board members for their dedication and service to our YMCA.
This year's theme was "Live Love". To live love is to let love manifest itself in all aspects of your life. To live love is to dedicate your life to making the world around you a better place. People that live love can be found all around our Y. In Adam Litwin and Corey Regan, two people that take time out of their busy days to change the lives of kids on the soccer and baseball field. Or Emily Moore, a sophomore at Central Davidson, who has spent countless hours volunteering with our child care program so that our children can have an even greater experience. In Nancy Whitman, who encouraged people for 15 years to lead a healthier lifestyle by teaching our Movers and Shakers class at 6:00am. Living Love is the cornerstone of CHAAMP. CHAAMP is designed to give children with special needs and their families activities and events they can attend free from judgement. CHAAMP would not be possible without the amazing leadership of Beth Mills and Alex Laughlin.
Living Love is found in our current and past board members like Tony Hyde who spent 12 years serving on the board; Thurston Bowman who was a board member for 28 years and on the committee to bring the YMCA to Thomasville; and Charlotte Yandell who champions the YMCA and all that it stands for on a daily basis. In Sandy McGhee and Tracy Brinkley who continue to inspire us with their work in Project Divine Interruption and many other areas of our community.
Living Love is not always an easy thing to do and as Tommy Hodges put it "the implications of Living Love when it is difficult are far greater than when it is easy. I truly believe that we Live Love as we seek to carry out the mission of the Y. We each have our role on the team and the power of the team, the power of us is a tremendous force."
Our YMCA accomplishes so many great things, both large and small, on a daily basis. It would not be possible without the people named above and the countless unnamed volunteers and members who also Live Love daily.
We enjoyed great food; shared many laughs; celebrated YMCA member, Dora Atlas's 96th birthday; and were reminded what it means to be a part of our YMCA. The awards dinner runs the gamut of emotions as we celebrate those who show us how to "Live Love". We hope everyone had a great time and if you missed it this year we hope to see you next year!
